The meerkat - also known as suricate - is a small carnivore and belongs to the mongoose family. Meerkats live in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southern Angola as well as South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a MOB - GANG or CLAN. In captivity meerkats have an approximate life span of 12 to 14 years but sadly about half this in the wild.
