Meet the ocean sunfish (Mola mola), the world's heaviest bony fish. These gentle giants can weigh up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs) and feature a bizarre, bullet-like shape with a rounded tail (clavus) and long dorsal fins.
True to their name, sunfish are often seen basking flat at the ocean surface. This sunbathing helps them warm up after deep, chilly dives for food and invites seabirds to clean parasites from their thick, leathery skin.
As specialized eaters, sunfish consume massive quantities of jellyfish, helping regulate marine food webs. Despite their intimidating size, they are completely docile and harmless to humans.
Currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, these pelagic explorers face threats from commercial fishing bycatch, boat strikes, and marine plastic pollution.
