Are you a proud Welsh Person or maybe a gift to remember a loved one from Wales (Cymru).
This lovely Welsh hat sterling silver charm will be a memory of this beautiful country.
The Welsh hat (het Gymreig) is one of the most distinctive and internationally recognized symbols of Welsh national identity.
Characterized by its tall, cylindrical or slightly tapering crown and wide, stiff brim, it is traditionally worn as part of the women's national costume.
1. Design and Materials
Structure: True 19th-century Welsh hats generally came in two main shapes: drum-shaped (vertical-sided) crowns popular in north-west Wales, and slightly tapering (chimney or conical) crowns worn across the rest of the country.
Composition: They were typically constructed using a stiff foundation of linen buckram or felt, which was then covered in black silk plush (giving it a texture similar to men's top hats of the era).
2. History and Evolution
Origins: While early travellers in the late 18th century noted that rural Welsh women often wore high-crowned beaver hats or adapted men's riding hats, the specific "Welsh hat" as a distinct fashion emerged around the 1830s.
National Symbol: By the 1840s, the hat had firmly transitioned from everyday or market wear into a patriotic emblem, frequently used in political cartoons and print media to personify Wales as a nation.
Decline: By the late 19th century, everyday use of the hat had faded as modern fashions took over. In fact, when artist Sydney Curnow Vosper painted his iconic 1908 watercolour Salem, he reportedly struggled to find a genuine Welsh hat locally and had to share a single hat among multiple models for the painting.
3. Cultural Context and Modern Use
The Full Costume: Historically, the hat was worn alongside other elements of traditional Welsh rural dress, including a flannel bedgown (betgwn), a patterned petticoat (pais), an apron, and a wool shawl.
St. David’s Day and Events: Today, miniaturized or fabric versions of the Welsh hat are widely worn by children and adults on St. David’s Day (March 1st), at national cultural festivals (Eisteddfodau), and by supporters cheering on the Welsh rugby and football teams.
